What's my #1 tip when dealing with clients?
Be genuinely interested and care about your customers. Ask questions and listen well. Listen to what is not being said as well as what is being said.
What is my most memorable experience as a business owner in France?
There are a couple. The most recent was organising a Christmas Fayre in November 2016. Having written a blog about savvy tips for promoting events in France, it was a good opportunity to put my own words into action. The day was hugely successful for sellers, we had huge footfall and the weather was kind. Feedback was that it was well advertised. Thus my ability to use social media and traditional advertising paid off!
What do I enjoy most about what I do?
I speak to many people about social media. What I love is how excited and energised business owners get when I share ways and ideas on how they can bring their story and their business alive. Business owners wear many hats and there are times when they cannot see the wood for the trees on how they can communicate what their business is about or how they can map out a plan for social media.
What do I do to switch off from your business?
Mmmm, tricky as I'm not very good at switching off. An older French house keeps both hubby and myself occupied and with it comes a huge garden and a potager. I have always wanted a potager. Had some good successes last year and will be getting green fingered again this year. Gardening is the perfect past time to calm an over active mind!
What advice would I give to someone starting out in business in France?
Do plenty of research. Talk to as many people as you can, listen to their experiences, but as one size does not fit all, be prepared to speak to those who are proficient at helping you set up, particularly if your language skills are not up to scratch when dealing with the relevant bureaus that you need to visit. Above all be patient. Everything takes its own sweet time in France, which can be frustrating when you are starting out. Get your plan ready. Prepare how you are going to market yourself and get out there and keep out there. Keep sowing those seeds!
A penguin walks through my front door wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he here?
I was hoping for a mojito... but as you have no central heating [yet] I will have to swap my sombrero for a woolly hat and have a cup of tea with you.
